How Long Does Weed Stay Good?

As expensive as it is, weed does have a fairly good shelf life.

When kept under the right conditions, it can last for months and even years depending on its original state and strain. No wonder it’s worth its weight in gold!

However, just like any other organic substance, several factors can interfere with the quality of your weed and shorten its life. Factors such as the right type of storage, air, temperature, moisture, and light are all too crucial for keeping its potency intact and taste flavorsome.

Lifespan of weed

In general, dried weed or cannabis can stay fresh for up to 6 months to 1 year depending on how well you store it.

After that, it might start losing its potency or strength, texture, and taste. That is, about a 2% loss in THC every month when kept at 20°C or less.

Typically, from 16% of THC (psychoactive effects) in the first year to almost half of its entire THC content within 4 years. Here’s how it goes:

  • 16% after 1 year.
  • 26% after 2 years.
  • 34% after 3 years.
  • 41% after 4 years.

From thereon, it just keeps on dropping until 100% of THC has been degraded and turned into CBN.

CBN or cannabinol is a non-psychoactive compound found in our favorite flower. As one of the main cannabinoids, it is claimed to have several health benefits but no “high” until smoked in extremely high doses.

This explains why the old weed would still make do with some effects when consumed in high quantities!

Nonetheless, too old or unused dried cannabis can still catch mold or mildew and spoil its texture and flavor when it comes into contact with moisture. Smoking it can make you cough or nauseated since now you aren’t just taking cannabis but also a bit of fungus.

While this should not be problematic if you are in your prime time or have developed a dependency on marijuana, those who aren’t used to it or are somehow allergic to fungi can certainly catch sickness by smoking moldy weed.

To keep your precious flower out of mold and moisture, it is better to learn how to store it.

How to store weed?

Despite being an organic substance, marijuana does come with a top-tier shelf life.

All you have to do is keep it stored right and tight.

Here’s how you can do it:

1. Select the right jar, or container free from any moisture or air contamination. Glass or mason jars with an air-tight seal are the perfect options.

2. Don’t give it light whether it is sunlight or an artificial UV light as both can suck it dry and harm its overall properties.

3. Watch out for the moisture! It’s your weed’s worst enemy. Make sure to maintain the moisture content between 59-63%. Or use a humidor or humidity packs instead.

4. Keep it cold and dry by storing it in a dark secluded spot away from direct sunlight or heat. The idea is to keep the temperature within 70℉ at all times as more than that could start melting and degenerating the THC content.

Last but not least, don’t ever store your weed in a fridge.
